After I had successfully worked to the brief of responding to Gerard Manley Hopkins, I felt that it would be sensible to carry on creating images that are guided by the work of another artist. Rather than respond to words again, I chose music.
I had already listened to Bach a great deal, but felt that I needed something a little more expressionistic and fantasy based. Liszt and his Transcendental Studies seemed ideal- not only was it a series of works, but they were short and challenging.
I started by drawing using pen and ink and them moved onto using relief print and paint. I found that my work became more textural and gestural. This was a very intense time of image making and I felt freed by it. The stories that Liszt's music created in my head and the stories that he had based his music on opened up a whole new world, full of myth and legend, almost like that of Lord of the Rings.
